I was called in by Cincinnati Computer Repair that had a computer that was operating very slowly. A spreadsheet of 25 min. to load! I didn’t use the spreadsheets very often but I could not imagine one that large! The computer was an IBM PS/2 model 70. It had an 80386 processor running at 20 MHz, 2 MB of RAM, and an 80 MB hard drive. It’s not exactly a speed demon, but it shouldn’t be a turtle either. I had the computer operator load the spreadsheet while I watched. The hard drive activity lights stay lit almost constantly as the hard drive crunch away. I suspected that her hard drive was very fragmented. Fragmentation can cause increased wear and tear on the drive and cause it to slow down.

I thought that a disk defragmentation program such as the Norton Utilities program, speed disk, would help. I knew that it wouldn’t be a total cure, but it would be a start. A defragmenting program reorganizes the files on the drive and put all their parts in a consecutive order. This makes the drive work less to access the file. I ran the defragmenting program and reloaded the file this time it took 18 min., about 36% increase; still a long time to wait for a sheet to load.

Most spreadsheet programs take advantage of expanded memory if available. To utilize the memory, the memory manager program must be loaded. I wondered if the expanded memory was being used. I checked the config.sys and autoexec.bat files for evidence of the memory manager, but found nothing. I installed the EMM386.exp program included in the DOS 5.0 and configure the system to use an extra one megabyte of memory.

Again the sheet was loaded. And now took around 12 min. to load. We were headed in the right direction.

The accountant at the same company mentioned that she had the same spreadsheet on her portable computer and it only took a few minutes to load. She had stopped using the portable because the hard drive crashed and she almost lost hospital’s entire budget. She said she didn’t understand why the portable was faster, because it was several years older than the IBM.

I checked the portable system configuration and found it was 880286 with 4 MB of memory and math coprocessor, running at 12 MHz. I surmise that the extra memory and coprocessor made the difference, even though it was an older machine.

A spreadsheet is a math intensive program and is a good candidate for coprocessor chip. I suggested we add memory and a coprocessor system. We ordered 4 MB of memory and a coprocessor. I installed the parts and reconfigured the system to utilize the memory and coprocessor. The spreadsheet now loads and slightly less than 1 min.

If you’re looking to replace the windows in your home, then it’s likely that your priorities are similar to many homeowners today. Most people want energy-efficient windows that will help cut down on energy costs so many of them choose Low-E (or Low Emissivity) windows from a variety of different manufacturers.

How they Work

Low-E windows use dual panes that are coated with a heat-reflecting material such as silver; the result is that the heat from the daytime sun is reflected back to the exterior of the home rather than passing through the window and heating the inside of the home. The result of this is that you run your air conditioner less to maintain the same temperature in the home, reducing energy costs. These coatings will help keep the home nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer by reducing the amount of heat exchange through the windows.

These Low-E windows generally have an energy star rating that indicates they pass minimum standards for energy efficiency.

Vinyl or Wood Windows?

Vinyl windows are preferred by consumers 2 to 1. That means twice as many people choose vinyl replacement windows over wood replacement windows. A company that specializes in Cincinnati replacement windows can help you determine which type is best for you, but wood windows are generally more expensive than vinyl and they tend to be higher maintenance.

If you decide to choose wood windows you’ll need to choose a quality brand that are protected from the elements.

Window Style

Window style is more about personal taste than anything else. Obviously some more complex styles are going to cost more, but they also may improve the look of your home dramatically. Some of the window style options available are:

Casement

Awning

Single hung

Double hung

Slider windows

Radius

Geometric styles

Simulated divided lights (also known as grill patterns)

Maintenance

One of the major reasons people choose vinyl windows over wood windows is that they’re low-maintenance; in fact, because vinyl is such a durable material, vinyl replacement windows require virtually no maintenance other than simply keeping them clean.

Wood windows on the other hand tend to require more maintenance. Since wood is an organic material, they are much more susceptible to the elements than are vinyl windows so it’s important you understand the differences before you shell out a bunch of money on replacement windows.

Hopefully you found this article informative. If you’re in the Cincinnati area and are looking for replacement windows, try contacting any of the Cincinnati window companies in the tri-state area to help you decide which windows are right for your budget and tastes. Likewise, if you’re on a home improvement kick, and are looking for Cincinnati landscaping, check out American Landscapes LLC.

Finding bridge crane parts is no longer as difficult as it once was. Most suppliers of parts for cranes now operate websites where parts can be quickly located and ordered.

This means that a crane part that formerly took weeks to locate and ordered can now be ordered in a few minutes. It also means that a crane owner can locate the best price for the parts they need.

The major parts for overhead cranes including breaks, hoists, motors and controls will usually be in stock at one of the online suppliers and ready for shipping. Some of these suppliers will even offer bargains and sales on some of the parts.

Quite a few of the suppliers will also have used parts which can be just as good as the new parts available. Ordering used parts can save a crane owner quite a bit of money on repairs.

Advantages to Ordering Crane Parts Online

The biggest advantage to ordering parts for cranes online is that owners will be able to get the best price possible. A person looking for crane parts will be able to compare prices at several websites and find the best price.

Another advantage is that crane parts can be located quickly so a crane can be put back into service quickly. Many businesses lose quite a bit of money because the overhead crane is broken down which halts production until it is repaired.

Companies that order their own parts can also save some money by doing crane repair and maintenance work in house. This can save money and reduce the time that cranes are down for repairs.

A firm that does its own crane repairs and maintenance will have to have a qualified technician on staff or on call. Employing such an individual is often cheaper than hiring outside repair services.

It also eliminate those times when everything is shut down while persons wait for the service technician to arrive and repair the equipment. Many companies loose money and even orders because of such breakdowns.

Other Crane Parts Online

The parts for other commonly used forms of crane such as mobile cranes, ship’s cranes, marine cranes and offshore cranes can also be found online. Some of the suppliers of these crane parts actually ship worldwide.

These cranes are complex pieces of machinery that have thousands of parts, many of which are only available from certain supplier. An individual can find almost part for these specialized cranes on line in just a few minutes.

Even the parts for the giant pedestal cranes used in ports and construction can be found online. A few of these websites can even connect crane owners with crane engineers and technicians who provide services such as inspection, repairs, maintenance, testing, load testing and set up.

Selling Crane Parts

There are also a number of websites that allow owners to sell crane parts online. These sites can help a crane owner clear some space their facility and make some extra bucks.

Such sites are often useful for getting rid of older equipment and parts for equipment the company has or uses.

Here’s a video of just what can happen when overhead cranes fail:

I ran into a guy at a meetup the other day in the Cincinnati area that I was really impressed with. He’s the owner of a company that does web design Cincinnati and, although I only maintain my own website, I was fascinated by the information I gathered from him. Incidentally, those guys also do SEO Cincinnati in case you’re looking to get your website ranked in the search engines. Enough so that I recorded the conversation (with his permission of course) and decided to write this post about some of the more interesting things he told me.

Design for Conversions

This is a big one that he stressed to me over and over again. He said most clients contact him wanting a pretty website that’s going to blow people away when they see it. You know, the types of websites that win design awards and you can be super proud to call your own. Unfortunately, he says those websites are generally the worst thing someone can have built unless their only goal is to win a design award. He told me the problem with those sites is that what looks pretty is not necessarily what makes a potential customer do what you want them to do (submit a lead form, call you, or purchase something on your e-commerce site).

And this is an important point…he mentioned direct response marketers as an example. Have you ever received an advertisement by mail that was just mind-bogglingly beautiful? I sure haven’t, and I’m sure most of you haven’t either. Direct response marketers (the guys sending you advertisements in the mail) have been perfecting the art of getting people to buy for over a hundred years. And you know what they realized long ago? That pretty designs don’t sell products/services. Instead, what sells is presenting the prospect with the information he or she is looking for, addressing objections, and making it brain-dead simple to navigate the website.

Any deviation from this formula will reduce the number of calls/leads/sales you get. So his point was that, while a pretty website may impress your friends, your friends aren’t who you’re selling to. You need to design with your prospects in mind, and in nearly all cases, the less fancy the design, the better.

Don’t go super cheap

I just said that simple designs generally convert better than complex designs, but please don’t take that to mean that simple designs are cheap. Sure, a simple design will generally be a bit less expensive than some over-the-top eye-popping website design from an award-winning design firm. But properly done, a high-converting website takes a good deal of planning and organization to ensure that it’s as well-optimized for conversions as possible.

Sometimes this involves user testing or eye-tracking tests, which can be done on larger projects. On smaller projects, a thorough understanding of who the prospect is, what his level of technical expertise is, what he’s looking for, and what his objections are is vitally important. This is NOT something any old fly-by-night web designer can understand, which is why you shouldn’t buy the cheapest website you can find. In nearly every case it’ll cost you more money in lost sales than you’ll save on the design itself.

You don’t have to like it

One thing that really stood out during that conversation was that my new contact said some of the best converting websites he’s every seen are also the most plain websites he’s ever seen. He says the reason for this is when you remove all the glitter and sparkle, a website is quite a simple thing. Every unnecessary design element you add to the site reduces the likelihood that the prospect will call or purchase.

My contact said one of the biggest mistakes he sees people make is that they get a design proof and judge it based on their own asthetic ideas, when in reality all they should be concerned with are 3 primary questions:

Is the design simple and professional?

Are there any unnecessary elements on the page that can distract the visitor from the primary goal of the website?

Is there a clear path from the point the visitor arrives on the site to the point where he/she takes action (submits a form, calls, or purchases)?

Is the information on the website accurate (e.g. address, phone, etc)

That’s it. If you answer yes to all these questions, for God’s sake, approve the design! The only other question you should be asking is, “Could this website be any simpler?”

I learned a great deal from the guys at Cincinnati web design, so I hope this article was informative for you as well!
